Ilha is a nonprofit cultural organization whose members are deeply engaged in the discussion and promotion of all sorts of contemporary art practices. Even if our main aim is to support and promote the individual work of each of our members, we are also deeply committed to creating long lasting links with other artists and artistic projects.
Ilha is located in Anjos, one of Lisbon’s most central areas. Inside our premises we are currently hosting four inter-disciplinary projects: an exhibition space, a bookshop with a focus on photography, a printing lab and a shared studio space where a few individuals and companies connected to the world of design and photography share their headquarters.
The Exhibition Floor
At our main entrance, this is where we showcase most projects and interact in person with our public and audience. Our events result from the initiative of our members as well as from invitations made to our fellow colleagues from around the world. You can send us your proposal if you wish so.
XYZ Books originated as a bookshop focused on photobooks that opened its doors June 14th 2013 in Chiado area, central Lisbon. After a maturation period of two years the bookshop joined Ilha and relocated itself to Anjos area, a residential neighbourhood in central Lisbon that, over the last few years, has been establishing itself as one of Lisbon’s main cultural hubs. Nowadays XYZ Books is much more than just a bookshop, it is also a publishing house and a artistic research center for artistic publications.
In order to support the artistic practice of its members and that of the surrounding community, XYZ Lab provides to specialized photographic services such as film processing, scanning and large format fine-art inkjet printing. XYZ Lab also provides services related to book publishing such as graphic design, pre-press and offset printing supervision.
